Bournemouth University 

 

Bournemouth University's international activities are clustered under its GlobalBU initiative coordinated by the Global Engagement Team. This brings together representatives from Faculties, and Professional Services teams covering International Student Recruitment, International Partnerships, Student and Staff Mobility, and Alumni. 

 

It has links with academic institutions abroad, these being mainly in Europe and the Far East. 

 

Its Research Blog highlights Bournemouth's research in Low and Middle Income Countries, particularly Nepal.

University of Portsmouth 

 

The University has two centres of importance related to global health

 

 

The Portsmouth-Brawijaya Centre is a collaboration between the University of Portsmouth and the University of Brawijaya in Malang, Indonesia. Its key mission  is to improve the health and well-being of people globally through research, teaching and training. This includes postgraduate training and continuing professional development for practising researchers.

 

The Centre for Blue Governance focuses on work related to securing the future of the planet's marine and freshwaters. Its overall objective is multidisciplinary collaboration to contribute to the design, setting-up and implementation of blue growth in countries, regions and political entities. It has five themes 

 

  • Blue policies, planning and security
  • Blue energy, technologies and transport solutions
  • Biodiversity, blue carbon and climate change
  • Aquatice resources management
  • Blue economy, human rights and labour

University of Southampton

 

Southampton has a wide range of global health related research carried out by different departments. Its Global Health Research Institute has four roles 

 

  • raising the visibility of global health
  • collaboration across the Faculty of Medicine and the wider University
  • enhancing education and research capacity and developing careers
  • engaging with communities and policy makers for impact 

 

Within it are the following specialised areas of work: -  

 

  • Demography/Big Data: This includes spatial demography, population and disease movements in low income settings and spatial epidemiology, malaria and the role of global travel networks on the spread of vector-borne diseases.
  • Infectious Diseases : Those particularly relevant to global health include influenza, TB, HIV, meningitis, pneumonia, chamydia HCV and diagnostics. 
  • Ageing and Lifelong Health : Research is aimed at addressing the increasing number of older people in the global population that will create pressure on traditions systems of support. 
  • Sustainable Development and Health : Research is focused on the alleviation of poverty (particularly the rural poor), nutritional health, food security and their link to ecosystem services
  • Lifecourse : This includes the developmental origins of health and disease and the main hub includes the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit alongside the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (Nutrition) and the nstitute of Developmental Sciences.

University of Winchester  

 

The Winchester Centre for Global Health is a hub of academics and researchers working together to contribute to the University’s aim to tackle global challenges through its research-related activity and teaching, by addressing ‘the most urgent problems facing humankind’, as set out in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. 

Centre members collaborate with health practitioners, employers, policy makers and academics to improve the understanding and knowledge of and participation in global health practice, mainly, though not exclusively, in low- and middle-income countries.

 

Its main areas of focus are 

 

  • Exploration of the scope, importantce and nature of practice in global health
  • Collaboration in and support of networks, the participants of which are engaged in or have oversight of global health activities, in low- and middle-income countries
  • Creation of robust methodologies for the evaluation of the impact of global health sustainable projects
